GeoCaching

We've found a new hobby - GeoCaching. So what is it?

"Geocaching : is an entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they take something they should try to leave something new behind in the cache."

For loads more information see the GeoCaching web page.

Having used a GPS for a while now to help find our way around roads whilst driving, we thought it was a good toy to use while enjoying walking around the UK ((and US) and the Rest of the World). It certainly adds that little bit of a challenge to a stroll out in the country.

Our calling card is a business card with a pictagram of one on it, this is made up from our initials, the S is a Cave Diving Arrow. Having been ardent scuba divers, especially in the fresh water caves in Florida, one key piece of equipment is the line arrow (white plastic triangles which clip onto the line) to indicate the way out of the cave. These are used by the divers visually in new caves when the water is clear and by touch and feel if the water has silted out and you have no visability. So line arrows are a cave explorers way home when its all gone to "hell in a hand basket" and your lost. Cave Divers also use them to indicate who has got the end of the line in a cave (ie who has gone the furthest and found the current end) - hence we thought a relevant calling card when geocaching - marking a successful find and the end of the hunt. This also explains our logo - the S for Sue and G for Graeme being based on the line arrow form. If you think it looks familiar, you must be a diver too, and know about GAS Diving as it is also the G and S part of the GAS Diving logo, our friend Andy making up the A.

WARNING          WARNING

In the following write ups there ARE spoilers - information that can give details away and ruin the experience of something. For example, telling someone the end of a movie before they see it. In geocaching, a spoiler gives away details of a cache location and can ruin the experience of the hunt...... Our detailed writeups WILL include things like details of the route to the cache as well as displaying pictures AND discriptions of the surrounding area which will provide its exact location.

So having been warned - GeoCachers tread carefully.......
