Benchmarks
So what is a Benchmark ?
"Geodetic control points are permanently affixed objects at various locations all over the United States to enable land surveying, civil engineering and mapping to be done efficiently. These objects are usually metal disks, but can be any other object that serves as a control point."
In english, NGS survey and other markers in the USA only. More information about benchmarking can be found, as expected, on the GeoCaching web site.
So getting into GeoCaching was deliberate, benchmarking pure fluke and occured just over a year before the first cache was found. We only realised we had found it when reading the GeoCaching web page. As luck would have it we had taken a photograph of it (not that that would surprise you if you have read other parts of this site) so thought we would log it.
